885 GAAT - Top 10 at Last!
Lately I have exposed myself to a ton of new music; some have stuck, others were given an honorable listen before being reshelved. Two albums in particular stand out as new “old favorites”. Literally, I have listened to these records nonstop, and thus have earned their way onto my top ten music list.
Death Cab for Cutie, Plans
Jeff Buckley, Grace
Let’s face it: music is elusive. Lyrics often speak of the desirables – unrequited love, the beauty of a fleeting moment, a wordless emotion that can only be captured in the mood and movement of offset notes. Themes present themselves, weaving in and out of the sonic tessellation, promising to resolve, misleading, wanting to navigate back to the start.
I love these sounds, and try my best to incorporate tense and empty chord structures in my own songwriting. Consider the hybrid sound of polychords, the rising motion of an augmented chord, or the empty shell of a sus2, the confusion of a tri-tone, or the complexity of the melodic minor scale. It isn’t often that you hear this approach to song writing.
A review of my top 10 albums to date:
Violent Femmes, Violent Femmes
The Beatles, Abbey Road
The Smiths, Hatful of Hollow
Radiohead, OK Computer
Phish, Rift
Nick Drake, Pink Moon
Wilco, Summerteeth
Tom Marshall & Co, Amfibian Tales
Death Cab for Cutie, Plans
Jeff Buckley, Grace
