Passing GAS

I wanted you all to know, I just passed GAS. It will be a full year until I have the opportunity to pass GAS once again. In the terms of a guitarist, GAS stands for Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. It is the dream of the guitarist, but nightmare to the spouse.

Because my wife and I are schoolteachers, our pay is unevenly distributed throughout the calendar year. In the springtime we scrimp and save to have enough money to tide us over the summer (when you better believe we take full advantage of vacation time). Come the fall, we are living on credit to make ends meet. Fortunately a few fall stipend checks pay the bills, and prepare us for holiday spending. It isn’t until right after the holidays that discretionary spending is possible. My window is January and February, and my guitar spending season is about to come to a close.

I have to say, I did well for myself this year. Take into consideration that this time last year, I created a setup from complete scratch. My rig consisted of:

[ Ibanez AS73 > Morley Volume Wah > Ibanez TS9 (AM silver mod) > Voodoo Lab Tremolo > SIB! Mr. Echo > Ibanez CS9 > Peavey Classic 30 ]

I played with this configuration for a while. As the new GAS season began to open, I reconceived how I wanted to shape my tone. First to go was my Peavey Amp. Although it is noted for having a specific tone, it just wasn’t me. Earlier this year I came across the Hughes & Kettner Puretone amp and immediately fell in love with it. My choices to sell or buy new guitar equipment all revolves around getting the best tone out of that amp. My rig is now:

[ Ibanez AS73 > Maxon Auto Filter > Ibanez TS9 (silver mod) > Voodoo Lab Tremolo > SIB! Mr. Echo > HomeBrew Electronics Dos Mos Clean Boost > Hughes & Kettner Puretone ]

The sound is amazing. I am trying for a tonal mixture of Radiohead (OK Computer, The Bends era) meets Phish (Trey’s clean guitar in the “Dinner and a Movie” solo) with a little surf guitar and 70’s Jerry Garcia mixed in. Picture tremolo dripping in echoes, focused TS9 leads, funky filter sweeps of “Shakedown Street” meets Badly Draw Boy’s “Once Around the Block”. I am looking to Phish, Radiohead, U2, Jeff Buckley, Ani Difranco, and Keller Williams for songwriting inspiration. Can you picture that? Aaahh. I love it all.

Next year? I already have my eyes set on a few things. But until then, I am very much happy with what I already own. Time to make some music.
